Cultural Currency

from $25.00

Description / Artist Statement

Cultural Currency examines the labor, creativity, and influence of Black beauty culture. The work combines imagery of hair styling tools, fashion, adornment, and portraiture to highlight the ways Black women have long shaped visual culture, trends, and standards of beauty.

The figure's eyes are intentionally obscured, suggesting both visibility and invisibility—the reality that Black cultural contributions are frequently celebrated while the people who create them remain overlooked. By centering beauty practices as sites of artistry, innovation, and cultural exchange, the piece challenges viewers to consider who profits from culture and who receives recognition for creating it.

Measurements / Details

Mixed-media collage and drawing on paper.

Additional Notes

Part of the artist's ongoing investigation into Black beauty, identity, labor, and representation.
