I was recently awarded a grant to produce a film project apart of The Science Museum of Minnesota’s RACE: Are We So Different? exhibition. The exhibition explores how systemic racism exists in healthcare, education, housing, incarceration, wealth, and STEM. For this exhibition. The proposed project I am wanting to create is [adding to a] previous short film I made in 2018 [called] Black Childbirth (original film can be viewed in ‘practice tab’), highlighting the ingrained racism and racial bias towards black women in the healthcare industry. The point of the video was to highlight the racial and ethnic disparities in pregnancy-related deaths in the healthcare industry, most predominantly in black women. This film was made during my internship with Saint Paul Neighborhood Network through the HECUA: Making Media Making Change program. In this film, I want to dive deeper into this issue by connecting with black mothers who have experienced a traumatic event at the hands of healthcare professionals. This not to exploit them but to create a space of unburdening and healing. I envision this being a round table of mothers sharing and validating each other's experiences. With this updated version I want to connect with women outside my network and invite healthcare professionals from traditional medicine to holistic practices to give their insight into the systemic racism affecting black women in the healthcare industry.
